Beard strands are thicker than scalp hair and more exposed to sun, wind, and everyday friction.

They also grow in different directions, which means more tangling and tension. 

If your beard hair is dry, it won’t hold up well under that kind of pressure. Split ends show up fast.

Check the tips of your beard hairs in good lighting. The damaged ones look like tiny forks and feel rough and wiry.

Your beard hair might catch onto the comb teeth or brush bristles when styling, or look more scruffy than usual.

Use sharp beard scissors and only take off the damaged ends. A light trim every 2–3 weeks keeps the splits from travelling up the hair strand and helps your beard look and feel fuller and healthier.

Keep your beard soft and flexible by holding in moisture. Work a little beard oil or balm into slightly damp hair so it sinks in properly.

The skin underneath your beard needs moisture too. When it’s dry, it produces less natural oil, which can leave longer beard hair brittle and wiry.

Avoid Heat Damage to Your Beard

High heat is one of the quickest ways to dry and fry beard hair, which causes split ends. Don't use a hair dryer often. If you have to use one, use a heat protectant and keep the dryer on the lowest setting.

Straighteners and other hot tools cause even more damage. They can destroy the hair instantly and leave weak spots across your whole beard.

Handle your beard Nicely

When your beard is wet, pat it dry with something that won't rough it up:
  • Bamboo towel or T-shirt (super smooth)
  • Microfibre towel (absorbent and soft)
  • Standard cotton towel (okay if you pat, not rub)
Comb out the knots at the tips  of your beard hair first, and then work your way up in calm, gentle strokes.

Buy the Best Products For Your Beard

The wrong shampoo or soap can strip out the natural oils that keep your beard healthy, leaving it dry and easy to damage. Products made just for beards  are gentler and usually loaded with ingredients that keep hair soft.

Dyes and other chemical treatments can also weaken the hair. If you colour your beard at home, don’t overdo it, and always follow up with extra conditioning to help it bounce back.

Build Strong Beard Hair With The Right Food

Your beard is built from the protein called keratin.  So it makes sense to eat lamb chops, mackerel, beef jerky and other protein rich foods for stronger beard hair.

Liver, walnuts and other biotin-rich foods help the beard-growth cycle to run smoothly. Drink enough water and your beard won’t feel like straw by the end of the day.
