Petroleum Jelly vs Beard Oil: Which Is Better for Your Beard?

Petroleum jelly is found in most bathroom cabinets. It’s cheap, thick, and promises to 'lock in moisture'. Beard oil on the other hand is more expensive and specially designed for beards. Here's a side by side comparison.

Can You Moisturise Your Beard with Petroleum Jelly and Beard Oil.

Petroleum jelly and beard oil both get called moisturisers, but they do completely different things.

They  both feel slick and give your beard a bit of shine.

But while one can help your beard, the other is mostly just sitting there doing its own thing.

Why Petroleum Jelly Doesn’t Help a Dry Beard

Petroleum Jelly doesn’t hydrate or moisturise facial hair

Petroleum jelly isn’t a source of hydration, and it doesn’t moisturise your beard either. 

It doesn’t add water, it doesn’t hold onto any, and it doesn’t draw any in.

So unless your beard’s been freshly hydrated with steam or water, petroleum jelly won't do much for your beard.

Petroleum jelly covers Dryness with Slick

Petroleum Jelly, like Vaseline, sits on top of the hair and skin in a thick, greasy layer.

That layer isn’t breathable and doesn’t soak in, it just hangs around on the surface. 

If your beard’s already dry, all Petroleum Jelly does is cover that dryness in something slick.

What Beard Oil Does for Your Beard Hair

Beard oil doesn’t hydrate, but it works well on a damp beard. It coats the hair lightly and smooths down the rough texture.

Beard Oil Benefits For Facial Hair

Once your beard's been hydrated, beard oil can help to soften coarse strands, so your beard feels less stiff during the day. 

It also adds natural, healthy-looking shine without looking greasy.

A few drops after a shower is usually enough for a short to medium length beard.

The oil gets through to the skin too, helping it stay calm and balanced.
