Electrolysis for Men: What to Expect

Electrolysis tackles hair at the root. A tiny probe is slid into each hair follicle and zaps it with electrical current, damaging the part that makes the hair grow. Over time, that follicle shuts down completely.

What Electrolysis Does

Electrolysis doesn’t mess about. A tiny probe goes into the follicle, sends a quick zap of electrical current, and basically tells the hair, you’re done here.

It shuts down the root so that hair can’t grow back.

Unlike laser, it doesn’t need to “see” dark hair. It works on every colour, every skin tone, and every stubborn patch that refuses to listen. If the hair exists, electrolysis can take it out for good.

3 Types of Electrolysis

  • Galvanic uses direct current to kick off a chemical reaction inside the follicle. It’s slow but gets the job done. Great for thick or coarse hair. 90-100% permanent and 0% risk of heat damage.
  • Thermolysis uses heat to [cook] the contents of hair follicles. It's 'faster' but might need more sessions. High heat can damage the skin around the follicle.
  • Blend is a mix of both. It’s popular for facial hair because it balances speed with depth.

How Electrolysis Feels During Treatment

What Electrolysis Feels Like for Men

Each zap feels like a quick sting or tiny pinch. Not as sharp as a papercut, not as deep as a splinter - just a flash of discomfort that’s over in a second. But, after a full session of those little jolts, it can start to grate.

Some areas are more sensitive than others. The upper lip and chin can sting quite a bit.
You might get used to it over time, or you might not - and that’s fine. A short break or a numbing cream can ease the sting.

How Long Electrolysis Takes to Work

Electrolysis for Permanent Hair Removal

Electrolysis doesn’t clear everything in one go.

Hair grows in cycles, and it only works on the ones that are actively growing. That’s why each follicle needs a few rounds before it gives up for good.

It usually takes between 15 and 30 sessions, spaced out every few weeks.

If the hair’s thick, the area’s large, or your hormones are keeping things lively, it might take a bit longer.

How to Prepare for Electrolysis

How to Get Ready for Electrolysis

Let the hair grow for about 3 to 5 days after shaving. That gives enough length for the treatment without pulling on the follicle.

Avoid caffeine and alcohol on the day. This includes coffee, tea, energy drinks, and pre-workout supplements.

They can make your skin more sensitive during the session. If you're expecting some discomfort, a mild painkiller about 30 minutes before can help.

How to Choose the Right Electrologist

Make sure they’re properly trained and licensed. You don’t want someone learning on the job. There’s no room for trial and error here.

Ask if they’ve worked with male clients before, and don’t be shy about asking for before-and-after photos.

Some focus more on certain areas, like facial hair, so if that’s your target, it helps to find someone who’s used to working on beards and strong growth patterns.

What to Expect After Electrolysis

The area might look a bit red or puffy right after - it’s nothing serious and usually settles down in a few hours.

Just keep the skin clean, don’t touch it more than you need to, and keep products simple.

If there’s swelling, a cold compress can help. Stick to a plain moisturiser for a day or two - nothing perfumed or too heavy.
